Student’s life gone with stolen laptop

Cary Tennis, Salon advice columnist, received a letter telling about the sad experience of a graduate student who lost most of her professional and personal life in a laptop theft. The burglars took not only her laptop computer but also stole the separate backup hard drive. Both devices contain her photos, letters, notes, music, keepsake as well as calendars.

People are advised to back up their data but most usually copy data to a device close to the computer. Any misfortune such as laptop theft will most likely render the separate backup hard drive destroyed or stolen.

Taking advantage of online backup services, fireproofs safes in another location of the house or safe-deposit boxes can improve data security. But how many people are that careful?
