Technology Causing Trouble on the Road

By: Harry80

It may already be against the law for you to use your cell phone while driving. As you are traveling this vacation season you may want to hone up on the local laws about what you can do behind the wheel. Many communities offer hefty fines for things like talking on the cell phone, texting while driving, and even eating.

The National Safety Council has conducted a study that shows driving distracted - because of a cell phone, computer or food - diverts the driver’s attention and can cause wrecks. A recent University of Utah study found that the impairment level could be comparable to that of driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent.

In reaction to the findings some states and local communities have already passed laws to deal with the situation. Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and the District of Columbia are just of a few of the major regions that have prohibited the use of cell phones while driving (and that does include texting).

The truth is that all distractions can be dangerous when you are behind the wheel. Eating, reading or applying makeup while navigating a three ton moving weapon is just not a wise choice. It puts you, everyone in the car with you, and everyone else on the road in danger. It would be better to leave a few minutes later and do what you need to do than to just not arrive at all.

All the laws in the country won’t fix the situation. Some people prefer to ignore the statistics, pay the fine and go on with the belief that it will never happen to them. Even if you are following the rules, laws and etiquette of the road you are still sharing it with thousands of people who aren’t. The only way to be safe is to put down the distractions so that you can keep your eyes out for the other distracted drivers on the road.
