The Career and Music of Rihanna

By: Gen Wright

Rihanna, born in 1988, is a singer from Bardados. She shot to fame in 1995, with her hit album, Music of the Sun. She is currently signed to the Def Jam Recordings label, and is the second Barbadian singer to have received a Grammy award.

Riding on her fame, she quickly released the a new single that featured the popular hit song "A Girl Like Me". The song quickly gained immense popularity and was frequently aired by major radio and TV stations.

Her third album was released in 2007. It did even better and had six hit singles. Three of which were international hit singles - "Umbrella", "Don't Stop the Music" and "Take a Bow". For a young singer who has debuted just 3 short years ago, Rihanna already has a very impressive record. In the U.S alone, she now has 11 top 40 hit singles.

Anyone would have wondered how Rihanna could have shot to fame so quickly. As it turns out, Rihanna wasn't exactly a newcomer in the entertainment industry. Even when she was in school, she was already heavily involved in music. While studying in the Combermere School, she was part of a 3 person musical group. In 2004, she was proudly announced to be the winner of Miss Combermere Beauty Pageant.

Being beautiful certainly has its advantages. Her talent and beauty captured the attention of Evans Rogers, a record producer who happened to be on vacation in Barbados in 2003. Evans helped her make some recordings and sent them to various recording companies. Jay-Z, a successful singer and businessman, shared the same sentiments as Evans, and signed her to Def Jam Recordings. And everything just took off from there.

Music of the Sun, Rihanna's debut album, was released on August 30, 2005. The album yielded 2 hit singles - "Pon de Replay", and "If It's Lovin' That You Want". "Pon de Replay" peaked at no.2 in the US on Billboard Hot 100 charts. "If It's Lovin' That You Want" did not do as well. It peaked at number 36. The album sold over five hundred thousand copies, which is a stunning result for a new recording artist.

Despite the debut album enjoying huge success on the charts, it was given a 2.5 out of 5 rating by Rolling Stone Magazine. The Magazine criticized the album for its lack of originality and replay value.

Ignoring all negative criticisms, Rihanna went on to release "A Girl Like Me" in 2006, and "Good Girl Gone Bad" in 2007. "A Girl like Me" achieved huge success, and peaked at no.1 in Australia and no.2 in the UK. "Good Girl Gone Bad" yielded a total of 8 hit singles.

During these album releases, Rihanna also tried her hand at acting and modeling. She is now known to be a young successful singer, actress, model, and fashion designer.
